  • (1888PressRelease) August 03, 2010 - RALEIGH, N.C. - MS Events (www.mseventsnc.org), the nonprofit organization coordinating several Triangle-area bike and foot races, announced today that a record 689 riders participated in the sixth annual Cup 'n Cone Tour. This beat last year's total of 667 by 3 percent. More than $10,000 was raised in support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Eastern North Carolina.

"To have such a great turnout despite a heat advisory and a heat index as high as 115 degrees was amazing," said Bruce Bokish, MS Events director. "It showed the cyclists' true passion and dedication to help raise money to fight multiple sclerosis."

Held on July 24, The Cup 'n Cone Tour consisted of 32- 50- or 67-mile road courses between Cary, N.C. and Carrboro, N.C. During the ride, cyclists received free ice cream from Maple View Farm Dairy Store in Orange County. All three tours began and ended at Green Hope High School in Cary. Upon finishing the ride, all participants received Goodberry's frozen custard and barbecue sandwiches courtesy of Backyard Bistro.

New this year is a King of the Mountain contest. Participants who chose the 50-mile and 67-mile routes were timed as they challenged the two-mile climb up the hills of Lystra Road. Greg Hilt of Apex, N.C. had the fastest elapsed time at 6:42. The fastest female rider was Cheryl Miller of Chapel Hill, N.C. finishing in 7:24. Cycling Spoken Here awarded prizes to the fastest climbers. Complete King of the Mountain results can be found at http://precisionrace.com/race-calendar.

The Cup 'n Cone Tour was the second of three 2010 fundraisers that MS Events hosts. The first was held in March, where more than 1,300 participants turned out for the second annual St. Patty's Run Green 8k in downtown Raleigh. The Ridgewood Turkey Trot, held annually on Thanksgiving Day, is the final 2010 event. Additional information is available at www.mseventsnc.org.
