Reasons Why You should Support Tarang and Other NGOs that are Funding the Education of Disadvantaged Children in India

There are several reasons why there should be more support for these NGOs and Indian Education. India has a population of more than 1 billion people. With a population this big, competing for available job places is difficult, especially given the fact that India is a developing country. Getting a good education is the only option for disadvantaged kids.

According to Indian government statistics, in 2001/02, the primary enrolment ratio was 83.7% and the number of children who reached grade 5 the same academic year was 59.8 %. The high dropout rate is due to the fact that most children in India are poor and cannot afford basic primary education. It is important to support the efforts of NGOs such as Tarang because while male literacy levels are at 75.85%, female literacy levels are at 54.16%. Tarang and other NGOs that focus in offering education for the poor practice affirmative action as they try to bring about equality and equity.

Supporting the efforts of NGOs such as Tarang is important because Tarang and similar NGOs are working towards bridging the gap between states and districts with high literacy rates and states and districts with low literacy rates. As an example, according to 1991 census results, Kerala state had a literacy level of 89.8% while Bihar had a literacy level of 38.5%. The district with the highest literacy rate was Kottayam, Kerala with 95.7% and the one with the lowest literacy rate was Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh with 19.0%. Basic (primary) education is compulsory in India. Education is mostly provided by the public sector (meaning it is not too expensive) and this means any contribution will go a long way in helping needy kids.
