Radioshow With Dw. Dunphy Now On Asbury Music

Host promises more strangeness as internet station evolves. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) November 14, 2011 - When it was announced that New Jersey's The Penguin internet radio station was changing names and tailoring its format to a more-Jersey-centric playlist, many asked how that would affect the stalwart programs that were hosted by The Penguin; in specific, Radioshow With Dw. Dunphy.

The answer, according to Dunphy: "Not much!" The series, a longtime fixture of The Penguin mixed Dunphy's radically eclectic musical tastes with an anarchic freeform radio aesthetic. "There were days when the D.J. was given free reign to play whatever he or she wanted," Dunphy said. "This whole thing about compartmentalization, just classic rock, or just pop, or whatever, that is a thing that came about twenty years ago and look where it got them."

What Dunphy alluded to was a constant changing of hands and formats for terrestrial radio stations, with diminishing returns continually posing a threat to their existence. "A lot of it was the business model. Advertisers wanted to be next to the hot hit, or the favorite track, and so in order to leverage their wants, the stations programmed themselves to death. There is hardly a moment you can turn on the radio now and be surprised. That was what Radioshow was all about; to bring the surprise and the weirdness back to the listening experience."

Formerly The Penguin, Asbury Music is the brainchild of Gary Wien, writer and host who has been actively involved with the New Jersey music scene for over twenty years. His books Beyond The Palace and Are You Listening? featured musicians that will make up a large segment of the internet radio station's roster, which is fine by Dunphy. "There are so many artists and bands out there in our state, and so few of them get the hearing they deserve. I'm grateful there's a place like Asbury Music for it."

At the same time, however, Dunphy insists his show must and will ride the edge of oddness. "I'm still going to play soundtrack music next to a metal tune, against an electronic track butted up against Captain Beefheart. There has to be a place for this sort of program too. We're confident that Asbury Music is going to be a terrific home for all of our mad science experiments."
