  • (1888PressRelease) September 09, 2010 - MIAMI - Radiation Shield Technologies (RST) has received the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 0108.01 Certification for its Demron High Energy Nuclear/Ballistic IED RDD Shield. The patented technology is the world's first and only fabric to offer multi-hazard protection against all types of nuclear, biological, chemical, infrared radiation and ballistic and bomb threats. The blanket serves as a protective shield for first responders and as a suppression blanket for improvised explosive devices (IED's), radiological dispersal devices (RDD's), and radiation assured devices (RAD's). It can significantly reduce the radius of radiation and save lives. For example, a large amount of radioactive material emitting up to one mile could affect almost 223,000 people in a region like New York City. A single shield could decrease the radius of radiation by more than 50% and reduce by 75% to 91% the number of people affected.

"Radiation Shield Technologies is to proud receive NIJ 0108.01 Certification, reaffirming Demron's ability to provide the advanced multi-hazard protection first responders need in today's uncertain global environment," said Ronald DeMeo, M.D., president and CEO of RST, and the world-renowned surgeon who invented Demron. "RST's team of engineering and technical professionals continuously improves and enhances our entire product line. Our collaboration with independent testing facilities enables us to experiment with multiple test variables and bullet velocities to achieve or exceed performance requirements for every level of protection our clients require."

The shield is continuously tested at independent facilities to ensure compliance with the NIJ Standard 0108.01 for Ballistic Resistant Protective Materials. It is manufactured with RST's patented Demron-W fabric, which is NFPA Class 2 Certified for the 1994-2007 Standard on Protective Ensembles for First Responders to CBRN Terrorism Incidents.

RST, which has 12 national and international patents and manufacturing facilities in Miami, is a global leader in the development of advanced personal-protection systems against all types of nuclear, chemical, biological and ballistic threats. The company has received ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 13485:2003 certifications for its design and manufacturing of Demron, its core technology, and the world's first and only fabric that provides complete protection from all nuclear, biological, chemical and bomb and ballistic threats as well as infrared radiation and heat.

The unique Demron nano compound may be incorporated into numerous personal protective garments for the military and medical industries, including full-body suits, vests, blankets and medical X-ray vests and aprons. The armor is used globally by the military, first responders, hazmat teams, police and fire-rescue personnel and health care professionals, among others. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) deploys it to help improve firefighter safety.

Demron acts like a liquid metal, making it thermo conductive and the only fabric that enables passive and active cooling, providing significant reduction of heat stress and making wearers less visible through thermal imagers. Demron, which RST manufactures at its Miami facility, has been proven to block gamma rays, X-rays and nuclear emissions by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, part of the National Nuclear Security Administration within the U.S. Department of Energy, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. It is used worldwide by NATO, NASA, the National Guard, US Navy, UAE and governments of South Korea, China, Saudi Arabia and Australia, among others.
