Queens Council on the Arts Explores Eastern European Literature and Music on April 24 as Part of QUILL Translation Events in Queens
Queens Council on the Arts, a sponsor of cultural events in Queens, is inviting New Yorkers to attend its upcoming night of creative translation on April 24 at DaMikelle Restaurant in Forest Hills.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 05, 2012 - Queens Council on the Arts, a provider of art, culture, and food events in NYC, is hosting its latest Queens in Love with Literature (QUILL) installment with a night of Eastern European music and literature on Tuesday, April 24 at DaMikelle Restaurant in Forest Hills. Available online at http://www.QueensCouncilArts.org, QCA is cosponsoring the QUILL event with the Hevesi Jewish Heritage Library at the Central Queens Y; admission is $10, and attendees will also have access to light refreshments courtesy of DaMikelle Restaurant and Lagunitas Brewing Company.
"Embracing the art of translation, our QUILL events in Queens have the goal of connecting New Yorkers with local authors coming from a range of linguistic backgrounds. Our 2011-2012 QUILL lineup takes the series a step further by inviting artists from other disciplines to facilitate a diverse, collaborative environment," said Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, Executive Director of QCA, which hosts an assortment of affordable and free events in NYC.
Authors Anya Ulinich and Boris Fishman will represent the event's literary component, addressing the literal and figurative translations inherent in the immigrant experience through excerpts from their upcoming works. In keeping with QCA's tradition of hosting NY music events, Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys will perform animated bluegrass inspired by traditional klezmer sounds.
Ulinich is the author of Petropolis, an acclaimed, satirical work inspired by her experiences as a young immigrant from Russia. The Brooklyn-based author earned an MFA from University of California, Davis; has contributed stories to Newsweek and The New York Times; and is now at work on her sophomore novel.
Born in the former Soviet Union, Fishman has been published in The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker, among other prominent publications; holds an MFA degree from New York University; and recently won a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Fishman is in the process of completing his first novel, A Replacement Life, which tells the story of a washed-up journalist who begins to forge claims for Holocaust restitution on behalf of Jewish ex-Soviets in New York City.
Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys are at the forefront of the klezmer revival; the band features Margot Leverett on clarinet, Joe Selly on guitar, and Kenny Kosek on fiddle. Fans can view the group's upcoming events in NYC and the greater metropolitan area at KlezmerMountainBoys.com.
QCA's QUILL events in Queens are supported in part by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. The 2011-2012 QUILL series of upcoming events in NYC is managed by three artist advisors: Luis Francia, author of the award-winning Eye of the Fish: A Personal Archipelago, a semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age account set in the Philippines; Panagiota Lilikaki, a native of Crete, Greece completing an MFA in Playwriting and Translation; and Richard Jeffrey Newman, who translated stories from the Iranian epic Shahnameh for The Teller of Tales, a 2011 collection.
