Bronzeville nonprofit QCDC gains recognition for implementing "People Spots," which are public spaces opened to promote safer and more walkable neighborhoods. The spots, which include parking spaces and alleys, have been known to increase foot traffic to local businesses.
- Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) August 26, 2013 - Quad Communities Development Corp.(QCDC), a nonprofit organization that helps spearhead economic development in the Bronzeville, North Kenwood/Oakland and Douglas communities, has received a 2013 Downtown Merit Award from the International Downtown Association for its implementation of the Chicago Department of Transportation's "People Spots" program.
The People Spots program is part of the City of Chicago's Make Way for People Initiative designed to open public ways such as streets, parking spots, plazas and alleys for programming that promotes safer and more walkable neighborhoods. The spots have been known to:
-- Increase business sales by boosting foot traffic to local businesses; and
-- Encourage "positive public loitering" or a safe space for people to relax and enjoy the neighborhoods.
"The People Spots Program has been a great addition to our efforts to revitalize retail corridors, support local businesses, and provide outdoor dining options to residents and visitors," said Christyn Henson, QCDC New Communities Program Director. "We hope quantify the economic impact of the program in the near future."
The People Spots are located on 47th and Champlain, near C'est Si Bon and Simply Soups, Salads and Sandwiches and 47th and Greenwood, near Little Black Pearl and Z& H Market Cafe. The project was among 24 qualified entries in the category of Public Space. This category recognizes capital improvements that enhanced the urban design, physical function, or economic viability of downtown and the community. QCDC will be recognized during IDA's World Congress & 59th Annual Conference.
"The People Spots initiative is a shining example of excellent management that delivers real results," said David Downey, IDA President and CEO.
