Punjab Boys & MP Girls became Champions at LPU hosted 34th Junior National (M/W) Softball Championship-2016
Delhi Girls and Chhattisgarh Boys remained at 2nd Place; whereas, Chandigarh and Haryana remained at 3rd Place in Girls' and Boys' competitions respectively.
- (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2016 - 34th Junior National (Men/Women) Softball Championship-2016 concluded at the host Lovely Professional University's four playgrounds. Punjab Boys & Madhya Pradesh Girls became Champions in their respective categories by exhibiting the best of spirited hitting, catching, running and pitching skills of the game. Delhi Girls and Chhattisgarh Boys remained at 2nd Place; whereas, Chandigarh Girls and Haryana Boys got 3rd Place. Chief Guest of the closing ceremony was LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal, who gave away the Winner and Runner-up Trophies, Medals, Certificates and Prizes to the concerned players, officials, co-ordinators and other participants. Guest of Honour MLA Punjab & President Softball Association of India Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Secretary General Dr Pravin Anaokar & Punjab Softball Association Secretary General Mr P N Passi accompanied Mr Mittal. 700+ players from 50 teams of boys & girls, 100 coaches, 50 members of the softball associations and 50 other officials, from across India participated in different league, super league, and final competitions. Some of the enthusiastic softball players from Nepal had also been at the Championship to learn the skills of the game to further promote it in their country. These members were also honoured with the sports-kit of the game.
Thanking LPU Management for the arrangements made for the Championship, MLA Sodhi informed that Softball game is included in the forthcoming Japan Olympics 2020. By sharing his personal experience as a shooter, he guided players that concentration plays an important role in a player's achievement. Dr Anaokar informed that neighbouring countries including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and other are being encouraged to adopt and promote this game. He also mentioned that the softball association is thinking to organize coaching camp at LPU as LPU already has many international players on its rolls.
Congratulating winners and encouraging all other participating players, officials & participants, Chancellor Mr Mittal said: "I am happy to see the successful outcome of the championship at LPU campus. Being the host, our university has tried its best to be up to the expectations of Softball Associations of both India and Punjab. We will like to share responsibility as entrusted upon us to promote and popularize this game more." Mr Mittal further added: "I am also happy to know about inclusion of the game in the next Olympics. I anticipate that two of our students, who have already excelled in this game at both national & international levels, will definitely get selected in the next Olympic squad."
One of the players of Chandigarh team Nimisha, and her mother Mrs Prem Lata, who herself is an illustrious athlete, shared: "Not only we but all players would also like to thank LPU administration for the arrangements made for us all. We have all admiration for the high-scale organization of the championship."
