The Puffin Plan is true story of a young ornithologist named Steve Kress who fell in love with puffins and went on a 50-year quest to bring them back to Maine’s shores. From two birds left in the entire state in 1902, there are now more than 1,300 pairs of puffins on Maine islands. Project Puffin has become one of the world’s biggest conservation victories of our time.

Steve and Derrick are working to make sure these endearing creatures continue to have a home and that there will be conservationists to do this critical work. Book sales help fund the ongoing field programs of Project Puffin and help fund internships for future generations of early career biologists.

Stephen W. Kress is a world renowned ornithologist and the founder of Project Puffin. He is the retired Vice President of Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society and is a Visiting Fellow of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Coauthor Derrick Z. Jackson has documented the success of Project Puffin with close and personal puffin photos. As a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize as well as numerous other awards for both his writing and photography, Derrick has an impressive array of photographic experience. Designer Yuyi Ling has laid out and designed over fifty books for Tumblehome.
