Preferred Corporate Housing and NBTA Members volunteer at the Star of Hope and raise $15,000 in donations
Preferred Corporate Housing (PCH) teams up with other NBTA members during their annual Travel Convention to refurbish the Star of Hope's Transitional Living Center for Women and Families.
- (1888PressRelease) August 30, 2010 - Each year, in conjunction with the National Business Travel Association's (NBTA) International Convention & Exposition, NBTA members are invited to assist with a service project that is centered around a local charity or organization. This year, the NBTA chose the Star of Hope Mission in Houston, Texas.
For more than 100 years, Star of Hope has been serving Houston's homeless population by helping men, women and children transition from homelessness to become successful, independent members of the community. Through their Transitional Living Center (TLC), the Star of Hope offers personal development, parenting skills, spiritual development, GED tutoring and counseling in addition to providing housing for up to 1,000 people on any given day.
"When PCH learned of this volunteering opportunity, we knew we had to get involved," said Samantha Elliott, President of Preferred Corporate Housing. "We are in the temporary housing business, so this was right up our alley." PCH organized a team of employees who, along with other NBTA members, assisted in refurbishing the TLC by painting apartments and hallways on Saturday, August 7th.
While volunteering at the Center, PCH learned that the Star of Hope was also in need of unused and gently used household items such as bed sheets, pillows, blankets, and clothing. "Since we provide fully furnished corporate apartments, we typically have these items on hand," said Megan FitzGerrell, Director of Accounts at PCH. "We gathered items from our warehouse and asked our employees to donate items as well. We were able to make a significant contribution." Julia Peterlin, Volunteer Liasion for the Star of Hope said, "These donated items will be distributed to our TLC Program Members once they leave our facility and begin to transition into their own homes, and we are extremely grateful that PCH offered these items for our center."
In addition to volunteering their time, NBTA members were also called upon to make monetary donations throughout the convention that took place in Houston, August 7 - 11th. In total, NBTA members collectively donated $15,000 to the Star of Hope Mission. "I am extremely proud of the members of NBTA and the staff here at PCH for coming together to help with this great cause," said Samantha Elliott.
