Poskanzer Skott Architects of Ridgewood, N.J. Designs New Corporate Headquarters for Mediacom Communications
State-of-the-Art Building Set on 200 Acres in Blooming Grove, N.Y.
- Bergen-Passaic, NJ (1888PressRelease) October 15, 2013 - When Mediacom Communications Corporation announced plans to build new corporate headquarters, its vision was to create a state-of-the-art facility that would reflect the high-tech nature of its business. As architect and master planner for the project, Barry Poskanzer of Ridgewood, N.J.-based Poskanzer Skott Architects (PSA), worked closely with the nation's 8th largest cable television company to meet these goals. The result is a forward-thinking office building that blends outstanding architectural design with sophisticated amenities-all in a rural setting.
Set on 200 acres of farmland in Blooming Grove, N.Y., the award-winning, 110,000-square-foot, three-story building design is described by Poskanzer as "paying dual homage to its agri-cultural context as well as the architecture of classic modernism." PSA spearheaded every detail in the design and development of the property and completed the project just 26 months after the initial meeting, fast-tracking through programming, site plan approvals and construction. Mediacom marked its official opening on Sept. 21.
"At Poskanzer Skott Architects, we pride ourselves on being able to translate clients' needs and wishes into a well-designed and highly functional building," Poskanzer said. "Mediacom sought a more efficient and organized office space for its new headquarters that would foster a unique work environment while allowing room for the company's future growth."
The headquarters structure is set on a hill in the middle of a rustic field, complete with stone walls and "wild" meadows. Manicured landscaping immediately surrounding the structure and parking area, combined with the building design, define and enhance the contrast between natural and man-made elements. Echoing the building's country setting, PSA incorporated a dramatic, three-story silo that houses conference spaces.
Inside, attention has been given to maximizing natural light and hilltop views for every employee. On the east side, a serpentine glass wall and sweeping stainless steel and glass staircase highlight a striking three-story lobby. The adjacent two-story atrium, which houses conference and training spaces, features balconies, seating areas and expansive views of the outdoor terrace and countryside. The ground floor includes lifestyle amenities such as a full-service cafeteria, fitness center, a technology lab and an interactive field operations center. The second and third stories also include a senior management wing, administration offices, workstation loft areas and a skylight roof garden.
Throughout the building, loft ceilings and dramatic lighting project a spacious, open feel. Workstations provide employees with privacy while seated but unobstructed views while standing. Private offices as well as loft spaces are situated along the building's outer walls. Color-coded furnishings distinguish each department, while modern, high-end finishes in common areas reflect attention to detail.
The headquarters building already has garnered several prestigious industry awards, including the Society of American Registered Architects 2013 Celebration of Architecture and Design; the Architects League of Northern New Jersey 2013 Peer Design Gold Award; and the Newark & Suburban Architects League 2012 Peer Design Bronze Award (un-built project).
