Located at Raymond Plaza, between Market Street and Raymond Boulevard, Newark Penn Station is served by the Newark Light Rail, New Jersey Transit commuter rail, Amtrak long distance trains, the PATH rapid transit system to Manhattan, and local, regional and national bus services (NJ Transit, Greyhound, and other private operators).
Penn Station serves more than 26,000 commuters every day, and over 700,000 Amtrak travelers every year. When the original air handlers serving the common areas of the station began to deteriorate, NJ Transit needed a solution, both a short term answer, and a longer term plan. The plan had to take into consideration both air conditioning in the Summer, and heat in the Winter.
On Site Energy rents 20 ton air handlers that are silent, compact, and portable. NJ Transit rented several of them and placed them in the common areas of the station. The water lines already available in the station provide both chilled water, and hot water. The air handlers immediately began to cool the space.
After using the air handlers for 30 days, NJ Transit purchased four of them and they are used 24 hours a day, all year long.
On Site Energy's portable air handlers have been used in many applications where a central physical plant provides a loop of chilled water and hot water to a collection of buildings or spaces. When chilled water or hot water is readily available, using 20 ton air handlers vastly reduces the power requirement (as compared to using DX air conditioners or electric heat).
