The recently passed U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act gives the FDA authority to be proactive in making farmers and food manufacturers more responsible for preventing contamination. The bill requires more frequent inspections of facilities and provides the FDA with greater authority over recalls. In addition, ISO 22000 with added specifications for food manufacturers was approved by the GFSI and is known as FSSC 22000. The Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) body manages this popular certification scheme and is responsible for the accreditation of registrars.
