Pop-artist D'anconia To Debut Kill Bill Inspired Art At Gallery 1988 "Crazy 4 Cult 5″ Show
LA-based Pop-Artist, Sean D'Anconia, will debut - "O-REN ISHII" - a KILL BILL-inspired art piece, as part of GALLERY 1988"s annual "CRAZY 4 CULT" art show. CRAZY 4 CULT 5 will feature 100 contemporary artists taking their shot at Cult, Underground and Infamous cinema. The show will run from June 8th until July 30th.
- (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2011 - Los Angeles - LA-based Pop-Artist, Sean D'Anconia, will debut his new KILL BILL inspired painting - "O-REN ISHII" - as part of GALLERY 1988"s annual "CRAZY 4 CULT" art show. This year's show features 100 artists taking aim at classic cult films. A hardcover book, celebrating last year's show, will also be released at the opening reception, to be held at 7020 Melrose Ave in Los Angeles on July 8th, at 7pm.
D'Anconia's mixed-media painting, which employs photography, hand drawing, digital graphics, vintage iconography and acrylic paint, culminates in a one-sheet poster homage to the Quentin Tarantino film, KILL BILL, a key inspiration for D'Anconia's signature "Pop-Fusion" visual aesthetic.
"O-REN ISHII" is a cinema-yet-to-be poster of D'Anconia's own prequel to KILL BILL, featuring interpretive art based on Lucy Liu's film character - O-Ren Ishii - and other iconic figures from both KILL BILL and Japanese cult cinema.
"This painting is a faux-movie poster. But it's very real to me. The KILL BILL documentary inspired my first trip to Japan almost 8 years ago. Japanese Icons like actresses Fuji Junko and Meiko Kaji were introduced to me by KILL BILL. And through my own visual storytelling, the painting is an homage to the heroic elements that mesmerized me in Tarantino's take on Japanese and Asian cinema, The whole trip advanced my longtime love of cult-cinema."
While many tales of old Japan were swept aside by the post-war devastation, D'Anconia's imaginative fusion-art transforms these ancient Japanese stories and give them a new footing. On the plains of post-war rubble arose new warriors who, touched by Hollywood and European film, re-invented the old code of honor - Bushido. D'Anconia's pop-art depicts the "heroic" aspects of Bushido- and the dynamic of the masculine and the feminine - as interpreted through cinema, and fused by European and Asian cultural sensibilities.
Behind this film-poster-turned-painting, D'Anconia says " is the story of my own road-trip through Japan and Hong Kong, where I later moved, meeting the icons of cult cinema along my way-like wanderers met spirits in old Japanese stories." This journey led D'Anconia to work with Shaw Bros. Studios in Hong Kong - a Tarantino favorite - revamping the studio's old movie posters into modern works of art. " Hong Kong action-cinema inspired my work, as it did in KILL BILL. So, working with Shaw was a great thrill. Often their low budget films have more character and intelligence than many of our modern multi-million dollar blockbusters".
