  • (1888PressRelease) November 14, 2011 - As the surveillance market moves forward towards IP/Ethernet systems, the subject of ease of integration has become a common subject. However, the issue of 'how to power and transmit IP signals over 100 metres has always troubled the installers of today. In order to optimise the use of IP cameras within a system, Enconn, specialists in Ethernet/IP connectivity solutions, have introduced their PoE (power over Ethernet) over coax solution extender for solving powering and wiring problems in most IP surveillance applications today.

Alpha Pricing, an authorised distributor of Axis products in Taiwan since 2004, has adopted and installed the Enconn's PoE extender devices into their IP surveillance systems in Taiwan. According to Alpha the Enconn PoE device and technology offers an efficient and cost effective solution.

Firstly it is about solving the problem of powering each IP camera at a remote site. By using PoE through coax, the technique allows today's IP surveillance systems the ability to provide similar powering methods to telephone systems in order to improve reliability. This means that IP surveillance will not be hindered even when there is a drop in power where the cameras are located. It is quite common to used PoE over coax to power regular IP camera(s) at 6~15.4 watts (802.3af) or high power up to 30 Watts(802.3at) remotely from 200~300m . The PoE extender over coax is a perfect fit for these conditions.

Darla Yang, Product Manager of Alpha Pricing, said "High cost fibre and wireless solutions may be suitable for long distances (>100m) transmission, but power supply always remains a problematic issue. PoE also provides a hassle-free contingency plan during power shortages, requiring only one UPS unit to power a central PoE switch (which in turn powers multiple PoE cameras) instead of providing a UPS unit for each camera location."

Secondly is the deployment of an IP link between IP camera and digital storage for outdoors in the middle distance range. Alpha Pricing had previously considered using fibre optical systems. When they discovered the costs and the inconvenience in its implementation and installation for the job, they turned to Enconn for the PoE coax solution extender. Darla said "The cost of equipment and cabling for a fibre optical system are extremely restrictive without even taking into account the additional costs to power each individual IP camera at all sites. We are happy to be introduced to the Enconn solution because it has solved and answered the problems that normally arise when considering powering and cabling options."

The greatest advantage with Enconn's PoE extender is its seamless integration with existing coax cables. Furthermore, simplicity of hardware and software makes it more convenient in use for installations and maintenance. In terms of the ongoing move towards environmentally friendly products, the Enconn PoE over coax solution not only minimises cable wastage, but also uses less power and save money as it consumes less than 2 Watts of power during operation.

"Environmentally friendly, easy-to-use and innovative devices are what is required for IP camera transmission. This PoE over coax solution fits the niche in the current market." Darla indicated, "With this solution, distance limitations and cost issues are both solved with one single coax cable. This makes Enconn's PoE extender a great solution in terms of marketing and cost effectiveness."
