PNA To Boost Links Between Cherbourg And Rouen As Transshipment Hub
The Port of Rouen and the Ports of Caen-Ouistreham and Cherbourg (PNA) have announced that they will take part in a joint development study in order to identify opportunities for collaborative port activities. This study, which is being carried out by EUROTRANS, a consultancy firm that specialises in port development, will identify opportunities for this collaborative project.

A similar approach has already been taken by the Port of Le Havre, which is set to establish a container shuttle service with the port of Caen."
PNA manages one of France's leading port facilities, including the deep-sea port of Cherbourg, with total traffic amounting to seven million tons of goods and two million passengers per annum.
Philip Deiss, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Rouen, explains: "It is very important to strengthen our links with the ports of Basse-Normandie, and, more particularly, with Cherbourg. This agreement allows us to look at things differently and to take advantage of the complementary nature of our ports. We already have an anchorage in Honfleur with the industrial bulk terminal, and we want to further broaden this partnership."
The port of Cherbourg is ideally positioned at the entrance of the English Channel/North Sea shipping lane. Cherbourg enjoys both privileged access to the deeper waters of the Channel and wide availability of land. Indeed, the port can accommodate deep-draught vessels and provides a platform for massification and transshipment for all types of goods.
Thanks to its position at the centre of the Le Havre-Paris axis, the Port of Rouen, for its part, is at the heart of a hinterland of prime importance in Europe. In the context of growing inter-port co-operation in the Baie de Seine (i.e. the Bay of the River Seine), the Port of Rouen and the Ports of Normandy Authority, which owns Caen-Ouistreham and Cherbourg, have decided to enter into discussions to identify development opportunities.
The study conducted by EUROTRANS, a marketing and consulting firm specialising in port-development issues,will identify the different strands potentially involved in the partnership between Rouen and PNA. The Port of Rouen and PNA are sharing the cost of this in-depth study, which is likely to reach about €20,000. Following the conclusions that are drawn, the two ports will present a detailed technical and financial assessment of the way forward.
About PNA
The ports of Caen-Ouistreham and Cherbourg are owned and run by Ports Normands Associés, known in English as the Ports of Normandy Authority (PNA). PNA's head office is in Caen.
The historic region of Normandy is currently made up of two separate regions: Lower Normandy (Basse-Normandie, in French) and Upper Normandy (Haute-Normandie). The two ports are located on the north-west coast of France and face southern England, on the other side of the English Channel. They belong to the western, maritime part of Basse-Normandy. For its part, Rouen is situated inland, and belongs to Haute-Normandie, further to the east.
PNA's aim is to develop intra-regional trade and co-operation, more particularly between Cherbourg and Rouen, and cross-Channel traffic in goods and passengers. The study will be a first step in this strategic reassessment of the value and relevance of north-western France's port infrastructure and logistical potential.
