PMP installs seals on Blackpool seafront
Improvements to a wastewater pumping station on Blackpool's seafront has involved PMP Ltd's AMEX-10 Seal in providing a crucial engineering solution.
- (1888PressRelease) March 19, 2011 - Rossendale, Lancs - PMP installed the two 2500mm diameter seals on a steel-lined concrete pipe that forms part of the emergency overflow system, below ground at Manchester Square, Blackpool.
United Utilities' framework contractor, KMI Plus specified the use of AMEX-10 Seals to accommodate up to 40mm thermal expansion and contraction specified for the system. This provided United Utilities with a cost engineered solution with a 60-year design life.
The AMEX-10 Seal is a low profile, mechanical seal that prevents leakage from pipe joints. A robust section of rubber that spans the joint is fitted using hydraulic expansion of stainless steel compression rings, thus eliminating the use of chemical adhesives and their associated hazards.
For the Manchester Square installation, the compression rings were manufactured in Duplex stainless steel, for extra strength and corrosion resistance. The EPDM rubber seal is able to accommodate substantial joint movement and is abrasion resistant.
Site Manager for KMI Plus, Paul Fox, remarked that although the work was planned, it was on a critical path. When the engineers recommended an upgrade to AMEX-10 ( http://pmp-ltd.co.uk/amex-10.php ) from conventional rocker pipe joints, PMP responded very quickly to order the non-stock components and complete the installation successfully.
