  • (1888PressRelease) June 24, 2011 - The month of May in Phuket was a busy one. Visitors to Phuket had increased by 36.58%, against the previous month of April. The majority of travelers were reported to be from Asia and Russia, while the numbers of European visitors to the area remained fairly similar to the month before. Air Asia has in fact recently made Phuket its regional hub with direct flights from Vietnam, Indonesia and Hong Kong to Phuket.

Despite May supposedly being the 4th wettest month of the year, there were only a few cloudy days and very little rain throughout the month with very little wind too which made for great for diving. Visitors do tend to welcome cloudy days on the island and use it as a great excuse to escape the hot temperature, hire a car and see more of the beautiful lush greenery which is even more fantastic to see when it's wet.

Phuket has seen over 3.7 million visitors this year so far, and authorities expect to hit their record breaking number of over 8 million at the end of 2011.

Construction of the new terminal at Phuket International Airport is scheduled to begin at the end of 2011. Phuket airport is already the second busiest in Thailand after Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi with 2,900,000 passengers passing through every year. The upgrades to Phuket airport which are worth THB 5.7 billion include a third terminal with new runway as well as the renovation of the existing domestic terminal which is expected to start around July 2012. The expansion cannot come soon enough as tourism rates climb each month.

The luxury 8over8 hotel, developed by Castlewood Group which is based in Singapore, will be located in Phuket close to the luxurious Bang Tao Beach and Laguna Resort.

"Tourism should continue to grow this month, due to the school holidays," commented Vita Kange, Office Manager of Castlewood Group.

The 8over8 hotel is scheduled to be completed end of next year.
