The SMS and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) provider reported a surge in demand for its online SMS service, www,interactsms.com. In the past week, 360,000 messages were sent by businesses to communicate up-to-the-minute information to employees on whether it is safe to travel to work, office opening and closing times and instructions to work from home if necessary.

Following a €500,000 investment earlier this year, Phonovation's network can now carry 650,000 texts per hour, making it a highly reliable service despite increased demand.

With the cold snap set to continue for another few days Gavin Carpenter, Sales Director of Phonovation, said its SMS service is a highly effective way to minimise the impact on productivity: "The service is helping hundreds of companies limit the cost of the cold snap. Absenteeism, as a result of the severe weather conditions is costing Irish businesses €170m per week, according to a survey this week from employers' group IBEC. The survey found that late arrival of staff was the main issue affecting business.
