Philippine Hospitals and Clinics Need to Upgrade to World-Class Standards

- (1888PressRelease) February 10, 2011 - In line with the government's thrust of providing universal access to healthcare, our hospitals and healthcare providers also need to upgrade their standards like what citizens of developed countries are getting in a socialized healthcare system to be efficient. This becomes more important as we see the Philippines being positioned as a medical tourism destination. Hospitals and clinics need to be internationally accredited in order for them to be globally recognized and become more credible providers in the international community.
International accreditation provides assurance on patient safety and quality of care, which are main concerns for patients and health insurance companies. It stimulates continuous improvement for healthcare organizations and builds credibility and confidence.
To address this issue, an international accreditation program called NABH International (NABH-I) was launched by its Philippine representative HealthCORE to encourage hospitals, clinics and other healthcare providers in the country to improve the quality of care in their facilities at par with international benchmarks.
According to former Senator and DOH Secretary Juan Flavier, who serves as Advisor to HealthCORE, "I support NABH-International in its mission of improving healthcare in our country. And I subscribe to the belief that we as Filipinos can achieve world-class standards."
NABH-I is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua) under its International Accreditation Program-one of the few accrediting organizations in the world to achieve this recognition. ISQua is an international body which grants approval to healthcare accreditation programs around the world as a seal of excellence.
Because of these reasons, NABH-I and HealthCORE have offered trainings and workshops beginning last year to educate Filipinos on how to provide excellent services and treatments to patients. This time, a more in-depth and comprehensive training will be held to teach hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and other small healthcare organizations on how to be internationally accredited and get global recognition.
Entitled "Workshop on Implementing International Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and Clinics", the training will be conducted from March 7 to 9, 2011 at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), San Miguel Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
This three-day training program concentrates on achieving quality assurance and quality improvement for hospitals focusing on patient safety and patient care, following the guiding principles of ISQua.
Among the important topics to be discussed in the workshop are standards on continuous quality improvement, good governance, facility safety, human resources, and information management system. Standards on access, care of patients, management of medication, patient rights, and infection control will likewise be covered, as part of the criteria set by ISQua and implemented by NABH-I. The workshop will be facilitated by the international surveyors and assessors themselves who are from accredited teaching hospitals.
Hospital owners, administrators, quality personnel, medical professionals, nursing supervisors, professionals, and practitioners in the healthcare industry are invited to register and participate in the training. It will be a venue for them not only to learn about methods and best practices on how to achieve world-class standards, but also assist them in achieving excellent marks for local accreditation such as PhilHealth.
