- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2022 - Peter DeMaria, CEO of Steelblox and Founder of DeMaria Design, accepted a Residential Architecture Award for Design Excellence by the American Institute of Architects in Los Angeles (AIA l LA). DeMaria’s Hope on Lafayette Bridge Housing project was chosen by a professional jury after an extensive six week long evaluation process.
Credited with creating the first recycled shipping container based home in the US, and currently immersed in the progressive world of prefabrication/modular architecture, DeMaria is considered a trailblazer within the architecture industry - always pushing past the boundaries of what can be accomplished. Revolutionizing the traditional definition of home, his outside-the-box thinking also embraces a strong focus on environmental sustainability. Peter strives to create a better tomorrow for the world. Building upon the history of shipping container based buildings and affordable housing design projects, his current innovative modular housing pursuits at SteelBlox, have launched a wide range of affordable housing solutions for low income families.
Peter’s “Hope on Lafayette” project focuses on building affordable housing and shelters for low income and impoverished individuals; helping them get back on their feet and essentially giving them a second chance in the world. This prototype is just one of several, built around the Los Angeles area and all share one common goal: to provide affordable housing for all impoverished people who need help getting back on their feet. Hope on Lafayette features private housing quarters, clean bathrooms, fresh water, as well as a large communal courtyard shared by all occupants. By taking people off the streets and making basic necessities easily accessible, Hope on Lafayette will surely become a safe haven for these individuals and will help provide them with one of the most powerful and imperative feelings when starting anew: HOPE.
In an interview with Peter DeMaria, conducted by TEAMprefab, when asked about what inspired Peter to create the Hope on Lafayette project and specifically focus on providing housing for the homeless, he responded with “people are meant to be loved, and things are meant to be used - and too often the opposite is true. The focus of our project is PEOPLE, not Architecture - Architecture is a means to an end”. With his recent recognition for having received the 2022 Residential Architecture Award alongside his strong determination to inspire individuals to “help their fellow man”, Peter DeMaria is well on his way to help revolutionize the architecture industry while helping improve the lives of billions of people all across the globe.
