(1888PressRelease) May 27, 2013 - The current bill is weakened by the fact that it limits the ability for some parents to bring their children here, and it eliminates the right for siblings to sponsor their brothers and sisters. These two visa categories already have some of our longest wait times - the backlog is up to 24 years.

Imagine the human toll if this policy takes place. If someone immigrates here, their parents can follow in relatively short order. But what happens if there's a sister or brother back home? What if that sibling faces a debilitating handicap?

Recently, I heard of the case of a young woman who immigrated as an emergency room doctor and became a naturalized citizen. She petitioned for her parents to come. But under the proposed Senate bill, she would not be able to petition for her 22-year-old brother who is developmentally disabled. Should she be forced to part ways with her kid brother? Should that doctor face a situation in which she can no longer bring her parents here, because doing so would leave a disabled sibling to fend for himself?

My opinion.

Family immigration is a vital component of the American identity. Families pool resources to start and run businesses that create American jobs; family members can care for young children and sick relatives, freeing breadwinners to contribute to our economy; and families provide security for aging workers.
