The demand for gold from China, likely to spike over the Lunar New Year period, has been phenomenal for some years now.
(1888PressRelease) January 23, 2012 - MIAMI, FL - China's burgeoning middle class is hoarding gold, apparently as fast as it can lay its hands on the precious metal, with gold demand per capita almost doubling in the last five years. Gold has long signified good luck, prosperity and status in China and personal investors are generally buying gold to keep as a store of wealth.
China has the second largest economy in the world and is reportedly 'disappointed' at recent growth figures of 8.4%; figures that would be the envy of the US, not to mention most European nations. The Chinese people tend to save rather than spend their disposable incomes, and those incomes have also grown significantly in recent years. Since China's increased interest in, and buying of, gold bullion as an investment has taken place over the last ten or eleven years, coinciding with a spectacular bull run for gold, it is not surprising that the Chinese people see their investment choice as extremely wise. Gold has increased more than fourfold over this period, far outpacing inflation and virtually any stock market commodity.
"Demand for gold from China has been huge and this demand is definitely set to continue for the foreseeable future," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "What is also significant is that Chinese investors buy physical bullion rather than shares or ETFs. If demand continues at the present rate, we are likely to see some problems with supply, which will clearly push up the price."
