Media attention may be on gold, but the white metals have a very positive long-term outlook.
(1888PressRelease) September 23, 2011 - MIAMI, FL - LBMA delegates forecast a platinum price of $2,163 an ounce by their next meeting, in November 2012 and $826 an ounce for palladium, within the same time frame. Platinum is experiencing problems with supply as South Africa sees wage increases and labor shortages. Returns on platinum mining are currently very low, and not reflective of the levels of risk and effort involved in mining the rare metal.
LBMA delegates also forecast $47 an ounce for silver. Investors have perhaps been wary of silver following its rather spectacular fall back in the spring. However, silver has held steady for a while now, hovering at around $40 or just above. Silver sees demand from both investment and industry, suggesting that higher prices are justified. Meanwhile the Royal Canadian Mint anticipates a 30% rise in its silver bullion sales this year.
"In the current media focus on gold, people may be forgiven for ignoring the other precious metals," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "LBMA forecasts for the white metals were very positive for 2012."
Currently, platinum is lagging behind gold; however, this is not likely to last for long, platinum's rarity alone suggests that it is deserving of its traditional role as the highest priced precious metal.
