Iran reported to have produced a nuclear fuel rod.
(1888PressRelease) January 03, 2012 - MIAMI, FL - Iran's reported actions caused investors to make a run for safety, resulting in the price of gold climbing to its highest point for a week, despite minimal trading volume to the New Year's holiday.
According to a Bloomberg report, Iran has produced a nuclear fuel rod. Tehran has an atomic research reactor that is used to produce radioisotopes for cancer treatment; according to reports Iran has now produced a domestically made rod, which has been inserted into the core of the atomic research reactor. This is concerning and heightens fears of US sanctions and a ban on the import of Iranian oil from European nations. For its part, Iran denies that it is developing nuclear weaponry and has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, the main route for oil tankers from the Persian Gulf.
At the same time, the people of Iran have been urged to avoid buying either gold or dollars yet it seems that there has been considerable demand for both with citizens lining up outside the country's central bank for a recent sale of gold coins and apparently clamoring to buy gold and dollars on the black market.
"The perceived threat from Iran is certainly not the best start to the New Year but it has spurred renewed demand for gold as a safe haven," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "Apparently, even Iranian citizens are desperately seeking safety, as their government attempts to prevent them from buying either gold or dollars. Today's rise in price suggests that gold bullion is still the ultimate refuge when people experience any kind of serious threat."
