Gold's performance over the year was extremely rewarding for investors.
(1888PressRelease) December 31, 2011 - MIAMI, FL - Although there was a last minute recovery, precious metals ended 2011 on a lackluster note with a fourth quarter loss. Nevertheless, gold gained close to 12% over the year as a whole, actually a very respectable return on investment. The long-term trend remains upward and investors looking at gold as insurance for the long haul cannot - seriously - complain about its performance. A 12% gain is well ahead of inflation, not to mention outperforming a whole host of other stocks and equities.
Silver had a volatile year also, peaking early; it then fell far and fast but has held fairly steady ever since the spring and is already recouping losses seen earlier this week. Platinum was very healthy - for the first nine months of the year - then it suffered its own fall. At the time of writing, however, it is already starting to bounce back and may well be looking at a strong recovery in early 2012. For rarity value alone, we can expect a strong rebound from platinum. Palladium has also made valiant efforts to recover from the September fall and is also strongly supported by the basic market place economics of supply and demand. Palladium also made gains Friday.
"The final week of the year is traditionally aberrant, moving in the opposite direction of the weeks to come," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "The losses that precious metals experienced earlier in the week were already being reversed Friday and we expect to see this trend continue during the first weeks of January."
