World's largest economies face trillions of dollars of debt maturing this year.
(1888PressRelease) January 04, 2012 - MIAMI, FL - Sovereign debt has not magically disappeared with the calendar change. In fact, according to a Bloomberg report, governments of the world's major economies have a total of more than $7.6 trillion of debt maturing this year and there is increased competition for a limited number of buyers. The cost of borrowing, under the circumstances is likely to rise by as much as 39% from 2011 levels. Japan and the US have the largest debt levels due this year with Japan at $3 trillion and the US at $2.8 trillion. Many governments are still in deficit, so debt levels are continuing to increase.
In Europe, recent austerity measures pushed through parliaments have not yet had chance to make a significant dent in the debt of many southern European nations. Temporary measures, such as the ECB's loans to banks, will realistically do little to staunch the flow.
"Considering the massive budget deficit in the US and the recent increase in the debt ceiling, it is difficult to understand the attraction of the dollar as a safe haven," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "Gold bullion has provided a reliable safe haven for investors and a hedge against inflation for decades. Unlike fiat currencies, the supply of gold cannot be suddenly increased; you cannot print more gold."
The first full trading day of 2012 suggests that investors are realizing this and buying gold and silver for wealth protection in light of international debt crises and the possible devaluation of the world's paper currencies.
