  • (1888PressRelease) June 02, 2012 - French-based translation company, Over the Word, has recently translated the business guide written for French and British people by the French Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain. The guide, entitled "Light at the End of the Tunnel", provides a set of practical reflections on doing Franco-British business and will be revealed at the French Ambassador's residence in London (UK) on 12 June 2012.

Founded in 2002 and based in Lyon (South-East France) and London (UK), Over the Word is a translation company specialising in legal and financial translation. The company offers bespoke translation services to professionals working in any sector that require its specialised skills. These professionals include lawyers, bankers and investment-fund managers.

Over the Word has recently translated the business guide "Light at the End of the Tunnel", which is a new tool designed to facilitate and promote cross-Channel business. The guide was put together by the Cross Cultural Relations Forum, set up by the French Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain, and provides the British and French with a set of anecdotes, practical reflections and advice on the art of doing business on both sides of the Channel.

Here are two examples from the guide:

"The British covertly flex their muscles, whereas the French overtly flex them."
"The British are proponents of 'win-win'. The French are proponents of 'I win - you lose.'"

"Light at the End of the Tunnel" will be revealed on Tuesday 12 June during an exclusive evening debate organised at the French Ambassador's residence in London. This invitation-only soirée, hosted and introduced by H.E. Mr Bernard Emié, French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, will feature a debate graced with the presence of such illustrious guest speakers as Lady Sylvia Joy CBE, Chairman of L'Oréal UK, and Vincent de Rivaz CBE, Chief Executive of EDF Energy.

Commercial ties have existed between the British and the French since long before the completion of the Channel Tunnel. However, centuries of commercial endeavour have seemingly done nothing to reduce the countless differences that persist between business in France and in the UK. Due to ignorance of local rules and practices, setting up across the Channel is an operation fraught with potential pitfalls similar to opening a fish-and-chip shop in the Sahara.

In the English version of the guide, John Mole explains, "In a culture where direct display of feelings is suppressed, humour (in Britain) is a cover for embarrassment and aggression."

Let us conclude then, in the words of Quebec humorist Daniel Lemire, "Quand vous verrez la lumière au bout du tunnel, priez pour que ce ne soit pas le train", which translates as, "When you see a light at the end of the tunnel, just pray it is not the train."
