  • (1888PressRelease) February 27, 2012 - Veteran NASCAR blogger and reporter Jerry Wilson gets back in the groove

On the eve of the 2012 Daytona 500, veteran NASCAR blogger and reporter Jerry "Diecast Dude" Wilson is relaunching one of the first NASCAR blogs. Diecast-Dude.com, in addition to Wilson's unique take on all things NASCAR, now features a news-oriented area dedicated to team communications and media releases.

Wilson explains the background events leading to his reviving the Diecast Dude brand. "In the past few years, I've been the first NASCAR blogger at SB Nation. I've also done straight reporting at Examiner.com. I'm proud of my work at both sites. However, as time as gone on I've grown to increasingly miss writing for myself. Now is the time to get back to my roots."

He adds, "Along with other pioneers such as the late Marc Borland, I've done a lot to legitimize blogging as a channel for motorsports media. When I see the efforts NASCAR is making to engage citizen journalists through programs such as the Citizen Journalists Media Corps -- of which I am not a member, by the way -- there's a fair amount of parental pride. It's an honor to support and advise tremendous sites such as Skirts and Scuffs. However, many of the new generation have no idea what, or who, came before them and paved the way. That is going to change."

As to why the addition of a news area, Wilson comments, "Give the people what they want. Hardcore fans can't get enough news. Why not reprint it direct from the source? I don't reprint press releases and pretend I wrote them, nor do I rewrite them to portray them as my own work, nor do I pull quotes from interviews conducted by other people, patch them into stories and pass the whole thing off as something original. When I run a press release, you know it's a press release. I'm already on the mailing list for many of the drivers and teams; I'd like to add them all."

So what is the Diecast Dude brand? "Be entertaining and informative. I've always worked under the notion that my readers are intelligent, knowledgable NASCAR fans. They don't need a rehash of the news; they already know the news. What I provide is a different perspective, laced with humor and the willingness to disappear down the occasional rabbit hole. It's building a community of merry pranksters joined by a common love of NASCAR and, far more often than not, deep friendship. I've been honest in my personal blog about the struggles I've gone through the past few years -- bereavements, financial struggles, battling personal demons. Reviving Diecast-Dude.com is a sign that while I'm still working out many things, I refuse to let them beat me and keep me from doing what I love." Wilson adds, "One thing that won't be making a comeback from the blog's original incarnation is mainstream media bashing for the sake of mainstream media bashing. Unless someone really ticks me off."

Final thoughts? "My goal is to make Diecast-Dude.com a destination site. Certainly I'd like to monetize it without selling out; I'm not running girlie pic ads for the sake of web traffic. I'd love to be able to blog full-time. That's something I have to build toward, of course. For now, the goal -- in addition to providing hard news straight from the teams, drivers and NASCAR itself -- is generating a consistent buzz to where people are thinking, 'I'd like to see what Diecast Dude is saying.' That is what I'm working on."
