  • (1888PressRelease) March 08, 2014 - Oregon Oldtime Fiddlers (OOTFA) have awarded a Kielhorn Endowment Grant to bring International Fiddle Performer and Teacher Hanneke Cassel to teach an Intermediate and Advanced Scottish Fiddle Workshops, Free for youth Fiddlers under 18 years of age at the 2014 OOTFA State Convention.

    The Scottish Fiddle Workshops are Free and will be held on April 12, at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall Oregon. There will be a morning Intermediate Class and an afternoon Advanced class. The only requirement for youth to attend is for their respective families to be members of the OOTFA, which is yearly fee of $20 and includes the Hodowner a monthly newsletter.

    Hanneke Cassel started her fiddling in Oregon at a young age and was involved with the Oregon Oldtime Fiddlers Association. Now many years later the native Oregonian has garnered many honors and awards. In 1996 she won the Grand Champion Division of the Oregon State Fiddle Contest and she is the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion. She holds a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance from Berklee College of Music, and she has performed and taught across North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and China.

    She has a stellar recording career appearing on fourteen CD's collaboratively and with her solo releases. In addition to her solo act, Hanneke tours regularly with Baroque/Celtic group Ensemble Galilei, Cherish the Ladies, Alasdair Fraser, and Matt Glaser and the Wayfaring Strangers and is co-founder (with Laura Cortese and Lissa Schneckenburger) of Celtic chick band Halali. She is currently on a CD Release tour for her latest album, DOT THE DRAGON"S EYES.

    She teaches regularly at Alasdair Fraser's Valley of the Moon and Sierra Fiddle Camps, Boston Harbor Fiddle Camp, and the Club Passim School of Music. Hanneke's fiddling has graced the stages of The Boston Hatch Shell, Boston's Symphony Hall (opening for Judy Collins), Mountain Stage, The Plaza Hotel, and the Lincoln Center.

    The workshops are Free and made possible by a Grant from the the Kielhorn Endowment Fund of the OOTFA and available to youth members 18 and under that are at an intermediate or advanced level of fiddle or violin skils.

    Non members are eligible to apply by obtaining a family membership with the OOTFA for $20. There are 25 spots for each workshop accepted in the order in which they are received. To download an online application package visit:
