Order of Marcus Aurelius Extends Helping Hand to Flood Victims in Valencia
The Order of Marcus Aurelius is aiding four families affected by recent floods in Valencia, providing housing, essentials, and loans. This initiative reflects Stoic values of compassion and resilience.
- (1888PressRelease) November 12, 2024 - In the wake of the devastating flash floods that recently ravaged parts of Spain, particularly the Valencian Community, resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread destruction, the Order of Marcus Aurelius is stepping forward to offer aid and support. This charitable organisation, founded in 2022 by Count Miklós Cseszneky and dedicated to promoting Stoic philosophy and virtuous living, announced today that it will provide comprehensive assistance to four families severely affected by the disaster.
While the Grand Priory of Spain and Portugal has previously concentrated its efforts on aiding Venezuelan, Cuban, and Nicaraguan refugees, this represents its first major undertaking within Spain itself. The Order's previous work assisting refugees from these countries highlights its commitment to humanitarian aid and aligns with its broader mission of promoting Stoic values of compassion and service to others.
"The choice of which families to support will be difficult, and to some extent, arbitrary," Count Miklós Cseszneky acknowledged. "Our resources are limited, but we believe it is our duty to act with compassion and justice, even in the face of such constraints. We are committed to providing practical assistance to those most in need, particularly families with young children, and especially orphans, who have suffered the most."
The four selected families will receive multifaceted support for several months, encompassing temporary housing, essential furniture, appliances, clothing, and interest-free loans to facilitate their recovery and rebuilding efforts. The aid will be implemented in the coming weeks.
Count Cseszneky further emphasised the Stoic principles guiding the Order's response: "Stoicism teaches us that while we cannot control external events like these devastating floods, we can control our response. We can choose to act with virtue, with compassion, and with resilience. Our hope is that this assistance will not only alleviate immediate suffering but also serve as a beacon of hope and resilience for these families as they navigate this difficult period."
The Order's actions reflect the core tenets of Stoicism, emphasising virtue, reason, and acceptance of what is beyond our control. By focusing on providing practical aid and fostering resilience, the Order embodies the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, whose teachings continue to inspire individuals to find strength and purpose in the face of adversity. This initiative highlights the practical application of Stoic principles in addressing real-world suffering and underscores the Order's commitment to contributing positively to society. The Order's work serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of Stoic philosophy in the face of human tragedy.
