Omek Shows Breakthrough Capabilities At SIGGRAPH Asia 2010
Omek presents breakthrough technology for blending of animation and live tracking for games, using depth sensors.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) December 17, 2010 - 3D motion detection developer Omek's http://www.omekinteractive.com presentation at SIGGRAPH, http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/ will cover the challenges in integrating 3D motion with animated characters for game applications. The ability for combining tracking and animation allows for a richer gaming experience and provides flexibility for game and application developers.
Most on-screen animation in games is triggered by an action. With gesture recognition, the action is performed with the body, such as a jump or wave of the hand, and then based on that action, the game is animated. However, when using movement detection, it is possible to show the person's actual movement, or the avatar performing the exact movement the person is doing. Showing an avatar doing exactly what the person is doing is known as tracking.
"The issue we've resolved is how to blend animation and tracking," said Dagan Eshar, Algorithm Team Leader for Omek Interactive, "For example, if you want a game character to run and jump over an obstacle, you want the running to be exactly as the person moves their legs, but the jump needs to be animated so the person clears the obstacle, and you can make it look cool, for example, by having the person do a flip in the air or other stunt."
Omek's solution allows for smooth transition between tracked actions and animated actions on-screen, as well as combining actions, such as would be needed in an application which tracked a person's steps running, but provide an animated torso triggered by user or in-game actions. The Omek Engine and SDK are available today, including the blending capabilities.
Omek will be showing the capabilities of its gesture-recognition and gesture-authoring engines, as well as games, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 6-9. http://www.cesweb.org/default.asp
