Oman Introduces New Jewelry Standards

The announcement was published on July 16, 2017, in Official Gazette No. (1202) as Ministerial Decision 148/2017 of July 10, 2017. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) August 11, 2017 - On July 10, 2017, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Sultanate of Oman decided to mandate two American ASTM International standards for jewelry products:

• ASTM F2923 ‘Standard Specification for Consumer Product Safety for Children’s Jewelry’
• ASTM F2999 ‘Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Adult Jewelry’

The most recent versions of these standards are currently ASTM F2923-2014 for children’s jewelry and ASTM F2999-2014 for adult jewelry. They contain several requirements, including those relating to:
• Cadmium content otherwise conforming to soluble, migratable or extractable cadmium
• Lead content
• Nickel release
• Soluble elements under ASTM F963
• Jewelry containing batteries
• Liquid-filled jewelry products
• Magnets or magnetic components
• Mechanical properties
• Warning statements

These two standards will be mandatory and will become effective on January 16, 2018. Stakeholders are now advised to ensure their jewelry products are compliant with the new standards.
