- Columbus, OH (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2014 - Arcadia Publishing will release its newest addition to the Images of America series on September 8, 2014. This new title, Old Brooklyn, researched and written by the Historical Society of Old Brooklyn honors the rich history of this neighborhood and its residents through over 200 vintage images.
Old Brooklyn, a neighborhood on the west side of Cleveland, was first established as a trading post in 1790 by Joseph Du Shattar. In the 1880s, farmers in the Schaaf Road area used greenhouses to plant and grow vegetables, and by the 1920s, the Old Brooklyn neighborhood was one of the nation's leading producers of greenhouse vegetables. This book proudly features the Greenhouse Industry and Ben Franklin Gardens.
Old Brooklyn's best known landmark is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which moved to Old Brooklyn in 1907. Other important sites highlighted in Old Brooklyn include the Jeremiah Gates Home, believed to be the oldest home in Old Brooklyn, the Brooklyn-Brighton Bridge, the Estabrook Recreation Center, the Benjamin Franklin School Gardens, and the former Deaconess Hospital.
Highlights of Old Brooklyn include:
- The photos collected for this book include the residents of not only the Old Brooklyn neighborhood today, but images of people who have moved on.
- Many house addresses are included in the descriptions of the photos so interested neighbors may drive by and see the actual location as it looks today.
- An image of the Sausage Shoppe, formerly known as Kichberger, and located at 4501 Memphis Ave.
