- (1888PressRelease) September 17, 2021 - OGSi, a leading ultrasonic meter manufacturer explained the working principle, benefits, and types of ultrasonic flow meters later last week. Team OGSI also spoke about their applications in numerous industries.
A spokesperson of OGSI said that an ultrasonic flow meter is used for measuring liquid velocity using ultrasound to analyze the volume of the flow of liquid. This system is considered ideal in situations where chemical compatibility, low-pressure drop, and low maintenance are key parameters. It is a volumetric meter that works well in applications involving wastewater, but not drinking water. Bubbles or minute particles within the liquid flow are needed for the process. Unlike mechanical flow meters, these meters do not have any moving parts and they affect the liquid’s audio properties.
Working Principle of an Ultrasonic Meter
Ultrasonic flow meter’s working principle is based on the use of sound waves that resolve the velocity of the fluid inside the pipe. There are 2 conditions in the pipe first being ‘no-flow’ and the other one ‘flowing’. In the case of no-flow, the frequencies of ultrasonic waves are transmitted into the pipe and the indications are similar. On the other hand, the reflected wave’s frequency is dissimilar in the second condition. That’s due to the Doppler Effect taking place in the second case.
The frequency shift can be increased linearly when the liquid flow in the pipe increases. The transmitter in the meter processes wave signals and the reflections are used to determine the flow rate. The system also contains transit time meters transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves in both directions. In the case of a no-flow condition, the time taken to flow between the upstream and downstream in between the transducers remains the same.
Team OGSI also spoke about the types of ultrasonic meters available in the market and offered by them which are listed below-
Types of Ultrasonic Meters
- Doppler velocity
These ultrasonic flow meters use reproduced ultrasonic noise to analyze liquid velocity.
- Ultrasonic level
This type of ultrasonic flow meter is considered ideal to calculate fluid levels in both open and closed channels.
- Ultrasonic clamp-on
Ultrasonic clamp-on meters are deemed perfect in applications where accessing the pipe is not feasible or virtually impossible.
Benefits of Using Ultrasonic Meters
Team OGSI said that ultrasonic meters offer a plethora of advantages which are mentioned as under:
- No liquid contact
- No risk of leakage
- Energy-saving process
- Good dynamic response
- No pressure loss
- Bidirectional liquid flow
- High accuracy levels
- No moving parts
Applications
Ultrasonic meters are used in a variety of applications including wastewater and dirty water. They are also used for process and custody flow and are considered a perfect alternative to vortex and electromagnetic flowmeters.
