  • (1888PressRelease) June 09, 2013 - Ogden, UT - Utah businesses donated much-needed supplies to the Wildlife Rehab Center of Northern Utah, the Utah Humane Society and the Weber County Animal Shelter.

Supplies will be used in ongoing care of animals, including those harmed during the Willard Bay oil spill. Donations came from multiple business owners, with the help of a local trade exchange.

"Trade members helped the community by donating extra time and service instead of money," said Tinamarie Fowler, owner of the Northern Utah ITEX office. "This is a great example of how businesses can creatively support the community, without financial hardship."

How Local Businesses Used Barter to Donate

Audiology Professionals, EnviroCare, Fertalawn, Money Mailer and Ames Tactical are all part of the ITEX Barter Network. In addition to their cash business, they also sell untapped inventory or services through the barter network.

When Fowler discovered a client with excess medical supplies and the need in the community, she contacted several ITEX members to coordinate purchasing them with trade credit. These ITEX trading partners donated without spending cash, and received a tax deduction.

"ITEX not only allows me to move my excess inventory and save cash but has given me the chance to donate to a cause that is important to me when a cash donation would not have been possible." Tammie Ames, Ames Tactical

Barter can be used creatively to help others, donate, and increase business income.

"Today's technology has allowed us to take the age-old business practice of barter and make it much more efficient," said Tinamarie Fowler, owner of the Northern Utah ITEX office. "Barter is still barter but technology has allowed us to bring it into the 21st century. We now have the option to use trade for business write-offs, moving excess inventory without taking huge losses, reduce cash expenses and yes - donate to worthy causes without feeling it in our bank accounts".
