Official Scrabble Dictionary maker Merriam-Webster officially released the Top Words of Summer 2010. Check to see which ten (10) words they were.
- (1888PressRelease) October 12, 2010 - Official Scrabble Dictionary maker Merriam-Webster officially released the Top Words of Summer 2010. These words were based upon the number of times words were searched on the Merrian-Webster.com website.
1. Refudiate: Sarah Palin's attention-getting coined blended together refute and repudiate. (Both of these were heavily searched, too.)
2. Inception
3. Despicable
4. Moratorium
5. Austere (and Austerity): most heavily searched around the time of the Greek debt crisis
6. Cacaphony: checked mostly during the World Cup in South Africa when the vuvuzela horns kept playing in the background during the games
7. Doppelganger: used in reference to the similarity between Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, and Julia Roberts, who portrays her in the movie
8. Opulent: referring to Chelsea Clinton's Wedding
9. Vapid: used by Supreme Court-nominee Elena Kagan to describe the confirmation proceedings
10. Frugal: several late-summer stories about how Americans are adjusting to new economic realities

The Official Scrabble Dictionary was originally published in 1978 as a joint effort of the National Scrabble Association Dictionary Committee and Merriam-Webster. The North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) is a community of tournament, club, and avid home players of the classic Scrabble board game.
The 4th and latest edition of the Official Scrabble Dictionary, available at http://www.OfficialScrabbleDictionary.com, was published in 2005. The newest edition contains corrections stemming from the original edition being hand compiled. After a debate in the 1980's, any word originally marked as offensive in the first edition was removed from the Scrabble Dictionary. However, they were kept on the Official Tournament and Club Word List to appease angry members of the National Scrabble Association.
