Nursing Informatics In High Demand to Manage Health Information Systems Critical to Health Care Delivery
Health Informatics is One of the Hottest Jobs in 2012 and Perfectly Suited for Those with Nursing Backgrounds.

According to the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), approximately 70,000 health informatics specialists are needed as employers look for specific, hard-to-find skills to fill key positions at the intersection of health care and IT. Nurses with a nursing informatics specialization will be in high demand to manage health information systems critical to the mission of health care delivery.

Richins points out that RNs who find work in this specialty typically have several years of experience and professional education in both information systems and nursing.
"One year of course work with a good set of fundamentals in computer science, programming and multiple applications will provide the groundwork needed in a nursing informatics role," says Richins.
For RNs looking to specialize, health care informatics is a career that puts them ahead of the curve for growth because their nursing background brings important strengths to this field.
"Nurses are perfectly suited for the field of health care informatics because they have the advantage of being the most frequent users of the electronic health record as well as knowledge about the workflow of a facility, but more importantly they possess the people skills needed because they are able to listen, critically interpret what they hear and translate it into action," says Richins.
She notes that nurses interested in advanced nursing positions are generally required to have a master's degree in informatics and informatics nurses must have strong verbal and communications skills, analytical skills, as well as clinical knowledge and technical proficiency.
After a few years of informatics work, Richins says that the next logical step is to take the Informatics Nurses Board Certification Exam offered by The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for the RN-BC credential to help improve a nurse's employment and salary potential.
The job market for a health care informatics specialist is especially bright. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates a 49 percent job growth in health information and health informatics and health care informatics was named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top careers in the U.S.
