- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) August 07, 2010 - A long anticipated victory has come to light. Proposition 8 was overturned August 4, 2010 by Chief U.S District Judge Vaughan Walker, deeming the voter approved ban unconstitutional. Like many of its avid supporters, Nuera Network, a gay matchmaking service in California was ecstatic to finally celebrate. As Denis Richardson, a representative from Nuera explains, "We were overjoyed, relieved and excited. This has been long awaited."
In the last year, the struggle with equal rights to marriage became a hot debate in many States. California saw the right to marry legalized and thereafter challenged by the upheaval of disapproving voters. But with the unwavering group of supporters, it has definitely been a journey meant for success. Like others, Nuera Network announced their bid against Prop 8 last year and remained hopeful of changes to come. "It has definitely been a struggle for our members and the gay community. But our determination to fight for equal rights, gay or straight, men or women, proved a rewarding journey" said Denis.
Although, the ruling will not immediately take effect and will certainly be appealed, everyone is optimistic this time around. "We're very confident that the courts will honour the ruling against Proposition 8. More and more people understand our cause; it's all a matter of time" comments Denis.
Time will tell if this will be a monumental step for gay rights in California. Nuera Network is definitely hopeful that other states will follow suit. Denis says, "Our service is proof that happiness and love has no boundaries. And you know what; people are starting to see that."
