NPR Features Portable Storage Container Offices
The National Portable Storage Association applauds NPR's coverage of the green building movement's use of portable storage containers.
- (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2010 - KANSAS CITY, MO. - National Public Radio recently featured office space constructed from shipping containers in Providence, Rhode Island. As the report goes, the building cost half the price the developer would have paid for traditional construction.
"The three-story office complex in Rhode Island is there for good-and it's made history as the first of its kind in the United States," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Even at $1.8 million for the complex, green building with portable storage is economical. The developers saved as much as they spent by recycling these portable storage containers."
Indeed, portable storage containers continue to win the attention of architects looking for new methods of sustainable design. That's one reason why the NPSA's 2010 Conference and Trade Show, which is being held in Orlando at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Hotel Nov. 7-9, will feature world-famous architect Adam Kalkin. Kalkin is best-known for his work in container housing and will speak about portable storage architecture during one of the sessions.
"NPR reported that the developer purchased the shipping containers for $2,000 each. That's a bargain compared to traditional building materials," said Joel Rathbone, Operations Manager for the NPSA. "Our members will get to learn more about these types of opportunities as Adam Kalkin discusses his approach to container architecture at our annual conference."
