Notes for Notes Gets Big Nashville Welcome

"Nashville sure knows how to welcome," said Notes for Notes executive director Philip Gilley, who drove himself and his possessions across country in the sweltering summer heat earlier this month. "It's my first day in town, and I open up the Scene to a story about Notes for Notes. And we share that cover story with Third Man Records, of all folks. What an honor!"

As explained in the article, which was written by the Scene's culture editor Steve Haruch, Notes for Notes develops and operates recording studios for young musicians to learn about the ins and outs of the music industry. But that's only part of the point. "A lot of these kids don't have anywhere else to go, and where they want to go is the recording studio," Gilley explains in the article. "What keeps them coming back is the relationships that form - not just between us and them, but with the other kids."

The expansion to Nashville was funded in part by a grant from the Hot Topic Foundation, and Gilley has been working hard with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee to establish two studios. The first is for the Andrew Jackson Boys & Girls Club (planned for opening by October 2011), and then the second will be in the Preston Taylor Boys & Girls Club (by December 2011). Both of those clubs already have studios, but Notes for Notes will revamp them with more equipment and provide full-time, on-site staffing by recording experts. Like in Santa Barbara, where the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club is digitally linked with the Santa Barbara West Boys & Girls Club, these Nashville studios will also be connected through Skype and cloud storage, allowing tomorrow's musicians to collaborate with each other across town. And when linking Nashville with Santa Barbara's studios, Notes for Notes will offer perhaps the first ever cross-country recording collaboration for kids ever.

In addition to helping Nashville's kids connect with their musical heritage, the new Notes for Notes venture will also raise the profile of the organization by ensuring more and deeper connections with music industry insiders. Already, the Notes for Notes advisory board includes Jeff Bridges, Jack Johnson, David Crosby, Carol Burnett, Chris Shiflett, and Glen Phillips, among other big names in the music and film industries, and the Nashville connection will attract other stars to lend their support as well.

"We're incredibly proud of the support we've received from professional musicians," said Gilley. "And we can only hope that our new presence in Nashville will foster even more kind-hearted rockers to lend their support to Notes for Notes."

Notes for Notes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth with free access to music instruments, instruction, and recording studio environments so that music can have a profoundly positive influence in their lives. The organization builds and operates recording studio environments called MusicBoxes that are packed with electric guitars, drums, keyboards, turntables, computers, and musical software. The first MusicBox was built in the City of Santa Barbara's 1235 Teen Center, the second is inside the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club on East Canon Perdido Street, and the third is inside the Santa Barbara West Boys & Girls Club on West Anapamu Street.
