Not Just Another Conference - Greenville, SC Churches and Non-Profits Team with Atlanta Ministry to Help the Homeless and Hungry

Three Greenville, SC churches, two Greenville non-profits and an Atlanta-area non-profit are combining forces before a church conference to work together on two projects which will benefit hungry and homeless people in the local area. End Quote

Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC (1888PressRelease) June 11, 2013 - There are 2,308 homeless in the Upstate of South Carolina, including 533 children1. One in six South Carolina families does not have enough food to feed themselves each night2. This year, to coincide with the Presbyterian Church in America's (PCA) 2013 General Assembly3, volunteers from three PCA churches (Horizon Church, Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church and Downtown Presbyterian Church) and an Atlanta-based non-profit, Home Repairs Ministries, are teaming up with two Greenville charitable organizations to help provide relief for the hungry and homeless. The projects will take place on June 15, 17 and 18, preceding the Assembly, which runs June 18 - 21 at the TD Convention Center. Projects include:

• Replacing old windows at a transitional home for women who cannot currently support themselves (for Miracle Hill Ministries)
• Disassembling a donated greenhouse so that it can be moved and reassembled for The Generous Garden Project

To get a better understanding of the impact of the projects on the Greenville hungry and homeless population, representatives from the different groups offered their perspectives.

Frankie Powell, Vice President for Development of Miracle Hill Ministries, shared - "It is a privilege to partner with PCA churches in our area. Transitional housing is vital to helping those who graduate our programs in their recovery process. New windows will not only help with energy costs but also with the aesthetics of the property."

According to Bo Cable, Executive Director of The Generous Garden Project, "The glass greenhouse is a much needed addition to our urban farm that will allow The Generous Garden Project to grow more fresh produce year round to give to those in need."

When asked what he hoped would be the legacy of the trip, Harvey Anderson, Executive Director of Home Repairs Ministries said, "We hope to leave something more than convention proceeds in Greenville, like non-profits that serve hurting people better able to do their ministries, new volunteers to serve them, and churches making and growing connections with them. We hope Greenville will have more churches interested in starting home repair teams to serve their own needy homeowners for Jesus."
