NorthShore University HealthSystem to establish The John and Carol Walter Center for Urologic Health, a comprehensive, state-of-the art destination center for urologic care and advanced research at NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital.
- Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) March 11, 2011 - NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) Foundation has received a $5 million gift to establish a comprehensive, state-of-the art destination center for urologic care and advanced research. The gracious donors of this gift are John R. and Carol A. Walter, who hail from the North Shore and currently reside in Boca Grande, Florida.
The John and Carol Walter Center for Urologic Health will be located in the new John and Carol Walter Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) at NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Illinois. The 90,000 square foot ACC-currently under construction and scheduled to open early next year-will include nearly 6,000 square feet devoted to urologic health.
"We thank John and Carol Walter for their extraordinary and generous gift," said Mark R. Neaman, President and CEO of NorthShore. "The Walter Center will become the preeminent destination in the Midwest for urologic care-a Center that will reinforce NorthShore's standing as a national leader in the areas of advanced medicine, breakthrough research, superior information technology and by providing highly personalized care to the patients we are privileged to serve."
The Center will comprise the current team of nine highly regarded, board-certified urologists and support staff that will offer leading medical care and advanced diagnosis and treatment of all urologic diseases-affecting both men and women-including preventive care, cancer, benign prostatic disease, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection, and related issues.
"Our family is grateful to Dr. Charles Brendler, Dr. Michael McGuire and the medical staff at NorthShore for their care, compassion, dedication and expertise in treating these debilitating illnesses and helping to restore a quality of life. This gift expresses our gratitude, thanks and desire for everyone afflicted with urologic disease to receive the same exceptional quality and compassionate care experience with positive outcomes and personal dignity," said John R. Walter, Founding Chairman, NorthShore Foundation and current NorthShore Corporate Board Director.
"I believe this Center will create the ideal clinical setting to ensure the absolute best care for our patients and the most effective collaboration for our medical team," said Charles B. Brendler, MD, Vice Chairman of Research and Development, Department of Surgery at NorthShore. Dr. Brendler and Michael McGuire, MD, Chief, Division of Urology, co-direct the Center for Urologic Health. They also co-lead the Active Surveillance Prostate Cancer Program at NorthShore-the only Institutional Review Board-approved program of its kind in the Chicago area and one of a few in the entire country.
The Walter Center will encompass four main programs:
1. Distinctive Patient Care Experience-Each patient will receive personalized care and support services integrating psychology, integrative medicine, genetics, nutrition and survivorship.
2. Patient & Community Outreach Education Programs-The Center will offer patients personalized education throughout their continuum of care; preventive health screenings and community education initiatives for high-risk populations; patient advisory groups and user-friendly multi-media technology to further optimize and enhance patient care.
3. Advanced Medical Informatics Technology & Clinical Pathways Research-NorthShore's nationally recognized electronic medical record system and medical informatics program will be used to create clinical databases, analyze patient outcomes, and establish clinical pathways to improve care and reduce healthcare delivery costs for patients and providers.
4. John and Carol Walter Urologic Research Endowment-NorthShore clinicians and scientists will receive endowment grants to conduct innovative clinical trials and translational research projects that show promise of moving from the laboratory to the clinical setting.
"The Walter Center will bring together at NorthShore the best and brightest minds in urologic care and research-now and in the future-to achieve the ultimate goal of curing the patient and not just the disease. This extraordinary center will also serve as the catalyst for developing better treatments for patients, stimulating novel discoveries to improve patient care and establishing best practices and standards of excellence that other institutions will emulate. This is a very exciting time for NorthShore. We remain deeply grateful to John and Carol Walter for their gift," added Dr. Brendler.
