  • (1888PressRelease) October 11, 2010 - The month of October is traditionally a low season in the Latin American travel industry, but this year tour operator Escaped to Peru, part of Escaped to Latin America has enjoyed a surge of business from an unexpected source.

Unsure about the origin of sudden tourist interest in Peru, the agency discovered the culprit to be the Swedish Academy's Nobel Prize for Literature, awarded to Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa.

"We started receiving an unusual number of calls and emails a couple of days ago, without knowing what was causing the extra demand for our tours. It was a very pleasant surprise!" explained Gary Sargent, Managing Director of Escaped to Latin America.

"We made the connection when one of my colleagues in the office mentioned that the Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa had been announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Conversations with our clients confirmed things." Mr. Sargent continued. "It seems to have put Peru more firmly in people's minds as a destination," he added.

One of the most acclaimed writers, playwrights, essayists and literary critics in the Hispanic world, most of Vargas Llosa's novels take place in Peru and follow the model of traditional Peruvian fiction regarding social protest that exposes political corruption, violence and racial prejudices.

The Swedish Academy awarded Vargas Llosa the prize, according to their website,"for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".

"Peru has a very interesting modern history besides the famous Inca period. A lot of Mario Vargas Llosa's work deals with significant events over the last few decades, whose effects that can still be seen in Peru today." Mr. Sargent said.

"Tourists travelling in Peru are able to witness the themes depicted in Vargas Llosa's work. That's a unique opportunity for lovers of literature and travel alike." He concluded.
