Cornea, Cataract & LASIK Surgeon Joel Confino, M.D. noted that this is the time of year many patients need to consider how and when to use or arrange for their employers to withhold Pre-Tax Flex Plan funds for non covered medical services.
Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, NJ (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2015 - "We are seeing many more patients who need to use their 2015 Flex Plan funds before year end than we typically have seen in prior years. What is interesting is that while the majority still come and see us for a consultation for bladeless LASIK, a growing number now come to see us and want to use their Flex Plan for laser cataract surgery and multifocal lens implants. This is different, and I think reflects the swell of baby boomers who are now of cataract age-many have actually had LASIK-and want to see if they can remain free of glasses even after having their cataracts removed. It is interesting how many are still working, and wish to continue working," said Dr. Confino.
Patients considering using Flex Plan funds for bladeless LASIK or laser cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants are reminded that these flexible spending account plans are "use it or lose it" plans. "If you have already withheld flex plan funds for 2015 and you do not use them throughout the plan year, they will be forfeited, so it is very important to plan carefully," noted Jerette Lerner, Director of Surgery Programs at The Eye Care & Surgery Center. "This is why we remind patients considering LASIK who have these funds to schedule a LASIK consultation, find out if they are a good candidate and arrange a treatment date that works into their schedule." Ms. Lerner further explained, "If you are thinking about LASIK in 2016, it is also worthwhile to schedule a LASIK evaluation so we can determine if you are a good candidate and then you can be comfortable asking your employer to withhold the funds for next year."
