  • (1888PressRelease) February 21, 2012 - As announced three weeks ago, soon-to-be satellite carrier Newsat (Australia) has finalized its second satellite capacity deal with MEASAT of Malaysia. Early this month, Newsat disclosed the financial terms of its pre-launch deal for the upcoming Ka band satellite, Jabiru 1, and also announced that the second deal would be finalized within the month.

Under the Jabiru 2 contract, Newsat will lease satellite capacity on future MEASAT satellite. The transponders will target Asia Pacific regions. The Jabiru 2 satellite payload will include 216MHz of Ku Band capacity, which can potentially generate $110 million revenues throughout its 15 year life span.

Newsat first announced the pre-launch deal for Jabiru 2 in 2010 but refused to name the satellite communications provider. It said in its press release that year that the Jabiru 2 deal will deliver satellite broadband services across Australia, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste. In a press released issued Febuary 20 this year, Newsat confirmed that its latest Jabiru-2 contract updated the November 2010 deal with technical and performance specifications.

The final agreement includes the provision of multiple transponders aimed at Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and large markets in Australia and neighboring territories (i.e. Timor Gap, Kimberly and North West Shelf ).

But unlike the $US180 million Jabiru-1 contract, the financial terms of the recent satellite communications deal was not disclosed.
