  • (1888PressRelease) April 04, 2011 - Grey Lynn, Auckland - Earlier this year, the NZ Festival of Motor Racing's annual two-weekend meeting at Hampton Downs celebrated the motorsport career of Chris Amon - one of New Zealand's famous 'trio at the top' motor racing aces. Amon, along with Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme, quickly became international stars and helped to throw the world's motorsport spotlight onto New Zealand during the '60s and '70s. Their legacy is still with us today and Chris Amon - one-time leader of the legendary Ferrari Formula One team - was suitably honoured at the NZ Festival of Motor Racing Celebrating Chris Amon.

Taking our theme from the Festival, this month's edition of NZ Classic Car commemorates Chris Amon's achievements with a series of special features. In the first of these, internationally renowned motoring journalist, Eoin Young, talks about the fabulous Ferrari Dino 246T - the car which Chris drove in the 1968 Tasman Series and which was shipped out from the US to appear at the Festival. Another iconic Formula One car - the March 701 - also made an appearance at the Festival. Now owned by Kiwi racing car collector, Roger Wills, this car was hanging on the wall in the Donington Collection for decades until rescued by Wills. Still in exactly the same condition as it was raced in 1970, the March and Chris Amon were reunited at Hampton Downs for the first time in over 40 years - and NZ Classic Car was there to record the occasion.

As well as features on the two ex-Amon cars - the Dino 246T and the March 701 - we also include, of course, a full report on the actual NZ Festival of Motor Racing.g. Not to mention classic racing reports from the Southern Festival of Speed and another entry in our popular Kiwis Abroad series - this month's feature is a Kiwi who realizes a life-long dream by racing alongside his boyhood hero, Stirling Moss.
