    Background
What are the greatest problems facing humanity today? As far back as 2003, the Nobel Laureate Richard E. Smalley outlined what he said would be Humanity's "Top Ten Problems' for the next 50 years" he placed energy consumption at top of the list in response to the projection that word population would increase from 6.5 billion to 8-10 billion by 2050.

In recent years, many people would list energy as a growing problem. Certainly many of our environmental problems today arise from the types of energy we use, and increased burning of fossil fuels will accelerate climate change.
The purpose of an energy management standard is to provide an organizational framework to integrate energy efficiency improvement processes into their management practices, including fine-tuning the operational processes and improving the energy related practices across all areas of the organization. Energy management seeks to apply to energy use the same culture of continual improvement that has been successfully used to improve quality and safety practices.
