New-Wave author movement revolutionizing book business.
Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) April 27, 2011 - Bob Frey, one of the New-Wave authors that are revolutionizing the publishing business, has released a sequel to his mystery novel, The DVD Murders. The new mystery, The Bashful Vampire Murder & Comic Book Murders, continues the exploits of Frank Callahan, a gay LAPD detective, and his friend and partner, Detective Barry Jennings.
The New-Wave or Artisan movement is composed of authors who are either rejecting or bypassing traditional publishers to publish their own works in the belief they can do better on their own. With the onset of e-books, self-publishing is now a low-cost business model just about any writer can afford. Using the internet as a retail book store, an author can self-publish his or her works and earn just about all the money from their book sales instead of the royalties doled out by publishing houses. Barry Eisler, an international thriller writer, for example, turned down a $500,000 advance from a mainstream publisher to self-publish his own book. As he explained, at that level of advance it would take forever to earn out the royalty rate and by selling through Amazon he can keep 70% of the profits. Amazon now sells more e-books than print books, and e-books sales continue to rise. Other popular authors, such as Seth Gordon, are following suit.
Another argument advanced by New-Wave authors is that e-publishing gives them more time to write, get their efforts out on the market quicker, and turn out more books at a faster rate. If an author signs with a traditional publisher, he has to wait sometimes up to a year before the print version is released. Then, because the publisher wants to capitalize on print sales, he has to wait additional months before the e-book is available. As a result, he loses months, perhaps years of royalties. If he self publishes, he can start making money right away. In addition, nowadays, even mainstream publishers expect an author to do a lot of his own promotion, and small independent publishers expect him to do it all. So why surrender all that money to a publisher for providing an editor, a graphic artist, and distributing a book to retail sales outlets when you can do all that yourself?
Frey had actually signed a contract with a traditional publisher but when he took a second look and realized the publisher retained all electronic rights, he had a change of heart and asked to break the contract which the publisher was kind enough to do. In his new mystery, The Bashful Vampire Murder begins where most vampire tales end: in the apprehension of a vampire hunter right after he has driven a stake through his quarry's heart. In the Comic Book Murders, Detectives Callahan and Jennings run the gamut of superhero and villain suspects, from Captain America and the Caped Crusader to the Joker and Firebug until outstanding police work and dogged persistence lead them to the unlikely killer. The Bashful Vampire Murder & Comic Book Murders is now available at Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle editions.
