- (1888PressRelease) September 26, 2013 - The Irish Academy of Public Relations has just launched a new 3-minute video which explains what journalism is all about. The video, which is free to view, is available on YouTube at http://youtu.be/K-Tx1gHAZtI.
"Journalists need an understanding of how the media works" said Ellen Gunning, Director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations. "Journalists need an understanding of the law - issues like libel and slander can close publications and bring a close to your own career! Journalists also need to understand the power of language - choice of words can determine how the reader perceives the person (e.g. di d he 'admit' something or did he 'state' it?). Journalists, of course, must be able to research a story, find people who will comment, keep a good contacts book and get paid for the work they do" she added.
What journalists also need, crucially, is an ability to write well. There are many styles of writing and all have a different structure. Journalists need to be able to write hard news. They must be able to convey the facts simply and succinctly. They also need to be able to write feature pieces which attract the interest of the reader. They must be able to conduct interviews and get the story. Finally, journalists write about specialist areas like sport, crime, politics, agriculture - and they also write about general news.
The Academy has graduates in 27 countries around the world writing for local and national print and broadcast media. The Academy's graduates work as writers, researchers, bloggers and presenters.
The Academy teaches an online Certificate in Journalism course which covers each of these areas. It is tutored by working journalists who offer insights and advice to participants as they study. The next Certificate in Journalism course begins on October 17th 2013. Further details from www.irishacadem.com/us.
