    Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our heroes who gave their life for our union. Now, 150+ years later on May 1- June 15, 2015 you can experience the massive memorial experience created by the Kenosha Civil War Museum, as the Midwest weeps for its dead. 734,408 men from the Upper Midwest fought in the Civil War. 104,145 never made it home.

    At the start of the Civil War no one predicted the great loss of life that would sweep both North and South. From 1861 to 1865 the states we know today as the Upper Midwest--Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin--sent over 734,408 men to war. 104,145 perished during their service.

    The" is a visual representation of the loss of life the Upper Midwestern states suffered during the Civil War. Each of the 1,042 stakes in the Memorial represents the loss of 100 men from the Upper Midwest. Walk by, drive by and stop by to pay tribute to the souls that paid the price to preserve the Union.

    There are dozens of opportunities to learn more about this pivotal time in American history. The Civil War Museum is like no other Civil War museum in the country. Feel the Civil War come alive all around you. The museum focuses on the Civil War from the perspective of the people of the six states of the upper middlewest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. These six states sent 750,000 men to serve in the Union army while providing much of the foodstuffs and raw materials necessary for the northern states to carry on the war. Through the use of personal stories and narratives, the Civil War Museum also explores how the Civil War impacted the people on the Western home front before, during and after the war by connecting the prewar causes to the postwar effects.
